Inspiring the Next Generation of STEM Leaders at a Denver Broncos Game
Storytelling isn’t just something we do—it’s a lens through which we experience the world and share some peoples favorite memories. Recently, we had the opportunity to film a truly memorable outreach program experience hosted by CAMPOS EPC and the Campos Foundation during the Denver Broncos vs. Indianapolis Colts game at Empire Field in Denver, CO.
This particular experience meant giving kids from underprivileged backgrounds who share a passion for STEM fields VIP access to a professional sporting event, and for some kids, this would be their first. By providing experiences like this, CAMPOS Foundation is not only sparking a deeper interest in STEM fields but also giving these kids hope and inspiration to pursue their dreams. Some of the students we interviewed told us about their dreams of becoming aerospace engineers, app creators, or entrepreneurs.
By the time the students arrived on Mane St outside of Empire Field, Broncos fans were already in full tailgate mode, creating an electric atmosphere that brought energy to the start of the day. This environment gave our production crew the perfect backdrop for capturing pre-stadium interviews. Hearing the kids talk about what they were most excited for was really special, and listening to CAMPOS Foundation Director, Deanna Campos-Miller, explain the significance of this day made it all the more meaningful. She said,
“The students we’re bringing are from Denver School of Science and Technology, so they have an interest in STEM. They’re all really high-achieving students, and I think it’s important to honor students, not just the kids that usually get all of the attention, that achieve athletically—but the kids who are doing really great in school and have a mission and desire to help solve some of the world’s biggest problems.”
After soaking up the tailgate energy, the students headed to the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame for lunch. What they didn’t know was that this was just the beginning of their unforgettable day. Broncos cheerleaders Mikayla and Sydney joined them to share their own backgrounds in STEM and reminded the students that they could achieve anything they set their minds to. You could tell the students were captivated by their stories because they fired back with plenty of questions.
Then, two lucky students walked away from the lunch with signed memorabilia from Broncos star cornerback Patrick Surtain—a jersey and a football. The excitement on their faces was priceless, and as storytellers, we felt so lucky to capture these moments that the kids can relive forever.
The next stop was the field. Standing on the sidelines, the students watched the Denver Broncos players warm up. And then it happened: they got to meet Patrick Surtain in person.
Watching him take the time to connect with the kids and offer words of encouragement was one of those rare moments that reminds you why we do what we do. As we filmed their reactions, it was impossible not to smile behind our monitors as we were capturing truly raw reactions and joy.
We wanted to make sure we captured this time in as much detail as possible, so we attached microphones to some of the students during their on-field experience. Listening to their unfiltered reactions while in our editing bay later on was like reliving the magic all over again. This was one of those times when our motto, “creativity breeds humanity,” rang true in every frame we shot.
After their time on the field, the students took to their seats to enjoy the game. The stadium energy was unreal, and there was no shortage of exciting content to film. Navigating through the crowd with a camera rig was no easy task with all of the fans thinking they would make it on the big screen if they hopped in front of our lens. And to top it off, the Broncos secured a win, giving these students a perfect ending to their day.
CAMPOS EPC and the Campos Foundation are doing amazing work empowering the next generation of STEM leaders. Witnessing and documenting their impact for others in the community to recognize was a privilege, and it’s a day we won’t soon forget. Creating videos for programs like this is more than just documenting the day- it’s crafting an impact on the community and sparking a ripple effect to other companies and people who are in the position to empower those in their community as well. If nothing else, the videos we created will live as a time capsule of the day for all of these kids to have for the rest of their life.
